Do you know that more than 36 million people in the United States do not have any teeth? And over 120 million people are missing at least one tooth. Shocking, right? There are many treatments available to replace missing teeth, like dentures, flippers, bridges, etc.

But which is the most efficient treatment if you are looking for a tooth replacement? Dental implants.

As per a recent study which considered a period over 10 years, the success rate of dental implants was about 90-95%. And when compared to other missing teeth replacement procedures, it is considerably higher.

Here we are going to see more about dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are screw-like structures that are surgically placed on your jawbone, which is covered with a crown. This will act as an artificial root on which the prosthetic tooth is implanted.

Who Can Get Dental Implants?

Even though it is one of the most successful and popular teeth replacement procedures today, not everyone can get dental implants. For that, you should have:

  • Good health to undergo the entire procedure
  • Healthy gums and jawbones to support the implant. Otherwise, you will have to get another surgery before the dental implant treatment to build a strong area for placing the dental implant
  • No chronic illnesses
  • No bad habits like smoking or tobacco addiction

Dental Implant Procedure

During the initial consultation, the dentist will do an oral exam. This is done to check whether you are eligible for an implant or not. Once the doctor approves to undergo the procedure, the decayed tooth would be removed. Next, a dental implant will be placed in your jawbone.

It will take around 2 to 6 months for complete healing, which usually depends on the patient’s oral and general overall health. In order to protect the implant during this healing period, the dentist might cover the implant with a temporary cap.

The artificial tooth is placed in this implant in the next appointment, which will act as a tooth root. You have to take local or general anesthesia since the entire procedure can be painful.
